Dachau Concentration Camp, located near the town of Dachau, 19.8 km from Munich, has many records of horror: it was the first concentration camp opened by the Nazis and the only one in operation during the entire Third Reich. It was used both as a Nazi training facility for SS camp guards and as a model for all the concentration camps built by the Nazis thereafter - 44,000 between concentration camps, extermination centers, and internment sites.
Visiting Dachau is a sobering, moving experience. We can never understand how much harm human beings can do to other human beings until we visit a concentration camp, and we can never prevent it from happening again until we understand how it could happen. The entrance is free for everybody, but visiting is not recommended for those under 13.
