Description
The Berlin Wall was not a simple wall, but a guarded complex system of 156.4 km of concrete barriers, electric fences and trenches, with several dog corridors, bunkers and watchtowers, built from 1961 to 1989. It surrounded West Berlin, turning it into a Western enclave isolated in the center of East Germany.
The Berlin Wall was not a simple wall, but the physical representation of the Iron Curtain that separated the members of the Warsaw Pact, under Soviet influence, from the members of NATO, under American influence, after World War II. It was the symbol of the Cold War and also the mother of all barriers that divide and oppose people, causing pain, suffering, unfreedom and injustice.
