Tucked away beyond the bustling villages lies a hidden coastal paradise that many visitors completely overlook. This scenic trail winds around the dramatic cliffs of Punta Mesco, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea and all five villages of Cinque Terre’s stunning coastline.
Local Guide Tip: Visit during sunset when the golden light transforms the ancient watchtower ruins into a magical silhouette. For the ultimate secluded experience, take the narrow path that branches down toward the small cove below the viewpoint (look for the stone marker with faded red and white trail signs) which leads to a pristine swimming spot rarely visited even by locals.

Hidden high above Riomaggiore sits an ancient sanctuary that provides a peaceful retreat from the crowds below. This historic pilgrimage site offers not just spiritual significance but also some of the most spectacular aerial views across the entire Cinque Terre coastline and beyond to Portovenere.
Local Guide Tip: The sanctuary has recently opened its bell tower to visitors in 2024, allowing access to an even more spectacular viewpoint. Take the recently restored hiking trail #3 from Riomaggiore (rather than the road) for the most rewarding approach through vineyards and olive groves. Bring water and sun protection as the trail is mostly exposed, and time your visit for late afternoon when the light creates a magical glow across the terraced hillsides.

While tourists crowd the coastal paths, the ancient agricultural hamlet of Volastra sits quietly above Manarola, surrounded by some of the most authentic and still-working vineyard terraces in Cinque Terre. These historic stone terraces have been cultivated for nearly 1,000 years and offer a glimpse into the true agricultural heritage of the region.
Local Guide Tip: Several family vineyards now offer small-scale tastings by appointment, with the Cantina Cinqueterre cooperative recently opening a micro-tasting room in 2024 where you can sample wines made from grapes grown on these very slopes. For a unique experience, book the new “Harvest Helper” program (available September-October) where you can participate in the traditional grape harvest alongside local families, followed by a home-cooked meal with spectacular views over Manarola below.

The iconic cliffside path connecting Riomaggiore and Manarola – visit first thing in the morning before 9am to avoid the crowds and secure your timed-entry ticket online at least a week in advance.
The largest sandy beach in Cinque Terre with crystal clear waters – head to the far eastern end of the beach beyond Punto Mesco for a quieter experience with better snorkeling.
The most photogenic village view in Cinque Terre from Punta Bonfiglio – time your visit for “blue hour” just after sunset when the village lights twinkle against the deepening blue sky for a more magical photo than the standard sunset shot.
The only Cinque Terre village perched on a clifftop rather than at sea level – skip the crowded shuttle bus and take the historic “Lardarina” staircase (377 steps) for stunning views and a stop at the secret panoramic terrace halfway up.
The famous coastal hiking path connecting all five villages – purchase the Cinque Terre Card online and start from Corniglia heading north for the less crowded direction with better morning light for photos.
Medieval watchtower offering 360° views of the village and coastline – visit during the weekly evening opening (Thursdays in summer) when the castle hosts small classical music performances under the stars.
The colorful boat-filled cove with its unique vertical village layout – descend the small hidden staircase beside Bar Centrale to reach the rocky platform below for the classic view without having to compete for photo space.
Ancient terraced vineyards showcasing centuries-old winemaking traditions – join a small-group harvest experience with local producer Cantina Cinque Terre to help pick grapes and enjoy a family-style lunch in the vineyards.
The striking black and white striped church perched dramatically on a rocky promontory – take the first ferry from La Spezia to arrive before the crowds and catch morning light illuminating the church’s seafacing façade.s
