The Mediterranean Steps Hidden Trail

Tucked away beyond the bustling tourist areas lies a hidden hiking paradise that many visitors completely overlook. This challenging but rewarding trail zigzags up the eastern face of the Rock of Gibraltar, offering breathtaking panoramic views that stretch across three countries and two continents while revealing hidden military bunkers, natural caves, and native flora that tell the geological story of this limestone monolith rising dramatically from the sea.

Local Guide Tip: Visit early morning (before 9am) during weekdays when even the cable car that services the Upper Rock is nearly empty. For the ultimate secluded experience, take the unmarked path that branches off to the right about halfway up the Steps (look for the small stone marker with a faded red arrow) which leads to a forgotten WWII observation post with unparalleled views of the Mediterranean and North Africa where passing ships appear as tiny toys on the blue horizon.

The Secretive Nun's Well

Hidden beneath the imposing southern face of the Rock lies a mysterious ancient water cistern that most Gibraltar visitors never discover. This subterranean chamber, believed to date back to Moorish times but bearing signs of much earlier Phoenician engineering, features a perfectly preserved stone archway and crystal-clear spring water that still bubbles from an unknown underground source deep within the limestone rock.

Local Guide Tip: Visit during the winter months when rainfall is higher and the well’s water level rises dramatically, creating ethereal reflections on the ancient stone ceiling. For the most atmospheric experience, bring a small flashlight and visit at dusk when the setting sun briefly illuminates the entrance chamber through a natural opening in the rock face.

The Forgotten World War II Tunnels of Ragged Staff

Beneath Gibraltar’s bustling streets lies an astonishing network of military tunnels that many casual visitors never explore. While the Great Siege Tunnels attract tourists, this lesser-known section carved into the Rock during WWII housed an entire underground city where thousands of military personnel lived and worked in secrecy, complete with power stations, water distillation facilities, hospitals, and command centers stretching over 34 miles of passages.

Local Guide Tip: Book the special “Hidden Tunnels Tour” at least two weeks in advance through the local historical society rather than the standard tourist operators. Request guide Peter Isola (only available on Mondays and Thursdays) who actually grew up playing in these tunnels as the son of a British officer.

Algarve top sights with insider tips

1. The Rock of Gibraltar

The iconic limestone monolith rising dramatically from the Mediterranean with spectacular panoramic views.
Insider Tip: Skip the crowded cable car and instead take the Mediterranean Steps trail for stunning quiet vantage points and a chance to spot Barbary partridges found nowhere else in Europe.

2. St. Michael’s Cave

A stunning natural grotto filled with impressive stalactites and stalagmites, often hosting concerts.
Insider Tip: Visit after 3pm when cruise ship passengers have departed, then ask the attendant about the hidden “lower cave” passage that leads to a spectacular chamber rarely shown to tourists.

3. Europa Point

Gibraltar’s southernmost point with views across to Africa and the meeting of the Mediterranean and Atlantic.
Insider Tip: The small café behind the lighthouse serves Gibraltar’s best fish sandwiches, prepared by a former Royal Navy chef using the morning’s catch.

4. The Great Siege Tunnels

Remarkable 18th-century military tunnels carved by hand into the northern face of the Rock.
Insider Tip: Look for the inconspicuous wooden door near the exit that leads to an unmarked WWII extension with original wartime graffiti preserved on the walls.

5. Main Street

Gibraltar’s bustling pedestrianized shopping district blending British high street familiarity with Mediterranean charm.
Insider Tip: The unassuming Irish Town parallel street offers much better local pubs, including “The Angry Friar” where off-duty military personnel gather on Thursday evenings.

6. Barbary Macaques

Europe’s only wild monkey population living freely on the upper Rock.
Insider Tip: Visit the small feeding area by Middle Hill Battery around 9am when the alpha males are most active, but keep at least five meters away from mothers with babies.

7. Moorish Castle

A medieval fortification with impressive ramparts offering insight into Gibraltar’s Moorish period.
Insider Tip: The southwest corner of the tower provides the best photography angle of the castle against the Bay of Gibraltar backdrop, especially captivating during the golden hour.

8. Catalan Bay

A picturesque fishing village and beach on Gibraltar’s eastern side with distinctive colorful houses.
Insider Tip: La Mamela restaurant appears touristy but serves the most authentic Calentita (Gibraltar’s national dish) made using a 200-year-old family recipe passed down through generations of Genoese settlers.

9. Trafalgar Cemetery

A historic burial ground containing graves of those who died from wounds sustained in the Battle of Trafalgar.
Insider Tip: Look for the unmarked grave in the far corner with only a small anchor carving—local legend claims it belongs to a spy who brought crucial intelligence to Admiral Nelson before the battle.

10. Dolphin Watching in the Bay

Boat excursions to see three species of dolphins that inhabit the nutrient-rich waters where Mediterranean meets Atlantic.
Insider Tip: Book with Dolphin Adventures (the smallest operator) which uses silent electric motors allowing their boats to get closer without disturbing the pods, and request Captain Esteban who can identify individual dolphins by their markings.
