Tucked away beyond the bustling tourist areas lies a hidden hiking paradise that many visitors completely overlook. This challenging but rewarding trail zigzags up the eastern face of the Rock of Gibraltar, offering breathtaking panoramic views that stretch across three countries and two continents while revealing hidden military bunkers, natural caves, and native flora that tell the geological story of this limestone monolith rising dramatically from the sea.
Local Guide Tip: Visit early morning (before 9am) during weekdays when even the cable car that services the Upper Rock is nearly empty. For the ultimate secluded experience, take the unmarked path that branches off to the right about halfway up the Steps (look for the small stone marker with a faded red arrow) which leads to a forgotten WWII observation post with unparalleled views of the Mediterranean and North Africa where passing ships appear as tiny toys on the blue horizon.

Hidden beneath the imposing southern face of the Rock lies a mysterious ancient water cistern that most Gibraltar visitors never discover. This subterranean chamber, believed to date back to Moorish times but bearing signs of much earlier Phoenician engineering, features a perfectly preserved stone archway and crystal-clear spring water that still bubbles from an unknown underground source deep within the limestone rock.
Local Guide Tip: Visit during the winter months when rainfall is higher and the well’s water level rises dramatically, creating ethereal reflections on the ancient stone ceiling. For the most atmospheric experience, bring a small flashlight and visit at dusk when the setting sun briefly illuminates the entrance chamber through a natural opening in the rock face.Â

Beneath Gibraltar’s bustling streets lies an astonishing network of military tunnels that many casual visitors never explore. While the Great Siege Tunnels attract tourists, this lesser-known section carved into the Rock during WWII housed an entire underground city where thousands of military personnel lived and worked in secrecy, complete with power stations, water distillation facilities, hospitals, and command centers stretching over 34 miles of passages.
Local Guide Tip: Book the special “Hidden Tunnels Tour” at least two weeks in advance through the local historical society rather than the standard tourist operators. Request guide Peter Isola (only available on Mondays and Thursdays) who actually grew up playing in these tunnels as the son of a British officer.Â
