Ready for Andalusia or the Basque Country? Wingman’s Dos, Don’ts, and Packing Tips for Your Next Spanish Adventure

Hola, adventurers! It’s Dorothy here! Your happy-go-lucky, ever-curious Wingman tour creator.

I’m thrilled to announce that our Wingman City Guide app now has audio tours for two of Spain’s most enchanting regions: the ever sun lit wonders of Andalusia (Cadiz, Malaga, Cordoba, Ronda, Seville) and the lush, coastal charm of the Basque Country (San Sebastian, Bilbao, Biarritz, Gaztelugatxe, and more).

Whether you’re a first-timer or a seasoned traveler, here are my essential dos, don’ts, and packing tips, straight from the heart of a guide who’s seen it all!

Andalusia: Land of Flamenco, White Villages, and Endless Sunshine

Do:

  • Embrace the Siesta: Shops and museums often close in the afternoon (usually 2–5 pm). Plan your sightseeing for mornings and evenings, and enjoy a leisurely lunch or nap like a local.
  • Try Local Tapas: Each city has its own specialties—Salmorejo in Cordoba, pescaíto frito in Cadiz, and espinacas con garbanzos in Seville. Order small, share, and let your taste buds travel!
  • Dress for the Heat (and Modesty): Summers are scorching, especially inland. Light, breathable fabrics are a must, but if you’re visiting religious sites, bring a scarf or shawl to cover shoulders.
  • Catch a Flamenco Show: Seville and Malaga have authentic tablaos. Book ahead and go for a local venue, not the tourist traps!
  • Wander the Old Towns: Get lost in the winding alleys of Ronda, Cordoba’s Jewish Quarter, or Seville’s Barrio Santa Cruz. The magic is in the details!

Don’t:

  • Don’t Expect Dinner Before 8 pm: Locals eat late! Adjust your schedule and enjoy the slower pace.
  • Don’t Skip Sun Protection: The Andalusian sun is no joke. Sunglasses, sunscreen, and a hat are your best friends.
  • Don’t Rush the Sights: The Alhambra, Mezquita, and Seville Cathedral deserve time. Book tickets in advance and soak up every detail.
  • Don’t Forget Cash: Some small tapas bars and markets still prefer cash over cards.

What to Pack:

  • Light, airy clothing (think linen or cotton)
  • Comfortable walking shoes (cobblestones galore!)
  • A scarf or shawl for churches and sun protection
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, and a hat
  • A small daypack for exploring
  • A travel fan (trust me, you’ll thank me in July!)

Basque Country: Green Hills, Pintxos, and Atlantic Breezes

Do:

  • Taste All the Pintxos: These bite-sized delights are a Basque must. Hop from bar to bar in San Sebastian or Bilbao and try something new at each stop.
  • Pack for Changeable Weather: Even in summer, the Basque coast can be breezy or rainy. Layers are key!
  • Explore Beyond the Cities: Take a hike to Gaztelugatxe (yes, that’s the Game of Thrones location!), or stroll the beaches of Biarritz.
  • Learn a Few Words of Basque or Spanish: Locals appreciate the effort, even a simple “Eskerrik asko” (thank you).
  • Use Public Transport: Trains and buses connect the region well and are a great way to see the countryside.

Don’t:

  • Don’t Expect Tapas—Ask for Pintxos: The Basque Country has its own culinary traditions. Order at the bar and pay when you leave.
  • Don’t Underestimate the Weather: Bring a light rain jacket and waterproof shoes, just in case.
  • Don’t Miss the Markets: Local markets are full of fresh produce, cheese, and Basque treats—perfect for a picnic.
  • Don’t Forget to Respect Local Customs: The Basque Country has a unique identity—embrace it and you’ll be welcomed.

What to Pack:

  • Layers: T-shirts, sweaters, and a light rain jacket
  • Comfortable shoes for city walks and countryside hikes
  • Small umbrella or packable raincoat
  • Power adapter (Type F for Spain and France)
  • Camera for those jaw-dropping coastal views
  • A notebook for jotting down your favorite pintxos bars!

Dorothy’s Final Wingman Tips

  • Download the Wingman app before you go so you can enjoy our audio tours on the road!
  • Check local festivals: Both regions are packed with fiestas in summer—think Feria in Andalusia or Semana Grande in San Sebastian.
  • Travel light and stay curious: The best moments happen when you’re open to the unexpected.

Whether you’re chasing the sun in Seville or the sea breeze in San Sebastian, Wingman’s got your back.

I can’t wait to guide you through the magic of Andalusia and the Basque Country! One story, one bite, and one adventure at a time.

¡Buen viaje and ongi etorri!
